England faces Panama with Reece James out and right-back options limited

World Cup 2026: England v Panama - Reece James out, but will Thomas Tuchel pick Declan Rice & Elliot Anderson?

Injury Concerns for England’s Right-Back Position

England is preparing for its upcoming match against Panama, but faces challenges with the absence of key defender Reece James. James sustained a hamstring injury during the 0-0 draw against Ghana and is expected to miss the game against Panama. Reports suggest his participation in the remainder of the World Cup could be limited, as he is not expected to be available until the knockout stages.

James was seen indicating to the bench late in the match against Ghana but could not be substituted as Thomas Tuchel had already used all five substitutions. He has not traveled with the squad to New Jersey for the final Group L game. Despite the setback, James has opted to remain with the squad, hoping to recover and potentially play in the later stages of the tournament.

This situation presents a significant problem for Tuchel, particularly after his initial backup right-back, Tino Livramento, withdrew from the squad before the tournament due to a hamstring issue. Tuchel subsequently called up centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, James’s teammate, as a replacement.

With James sidelined, Tuchel’s options for the right-back position are limited. Djed Spence is considered a potential replacement, though he has primarily played left-back for Tottenham and was selected for that position in the squad. Other players who could fill the role include centre-backs Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa. Quansah has played at right-back for England in a World Cup qualifying match against Albania, and Konsa has also featured in that position in a friendly against Wales.

Concerns have been raised regarding James’s injury history. Since the 2019-2020 season, James has only played more than 50% of Premier League minutes three times. His availability issues have led to questions about the decision-making process, especially given that he has been injured for a significant period over the past three seasons.

Midfield Fitness and Squad Rotation

In addition to the right-back dilemma, England’s midfield also faces fitness assessments. Elliot Anderson is being evaluated after sustaining a glute injury during the match against Ghana. While the injury is not believed to be serious, his availability for the Panama game is being assessed.

Declan Rice, Anderson’s midfield partner, participated in the full training session on Friday after not training fully on Thursday. Tuchel is reportedly considering resting one or both players against Panama to ensure their full recovery for the knockout stages of the tournament. Tuchel is expected to rotate his starting XI with an eye on the upcoming knockout matches.

England has already secured a spot in the last 32 of the competition. To guarantee the top spot in Group L, England needs to match or better Ghana’s result against Croatia on the final matchday. If England finishes first in Group L, they are currently projected to play Senegal in the first round of the knockout stages.

Tuchel’s Assessment of Team Performance

Tuchel has also addressed the performance of his team’s left-hand side, noting that its fluidity has not been consistent with pre-tournament expectations. He observed that the left side struggled in the first two matches of the World Cup, despite playing well in a game against Costa Rica before the tournament began.

Tuchel mentioned that Nico O’Reilly, Declan Rice, and Anthony Gordon had played with significant freedom and connection in previous games. He acknowledged that the left unit has struggled to have the same impact in the current matches, but emphasized trust in his players, stating, “There is no need to take them out and punish them. We have every right to trust them again but other players are pushing so let’s see.”

Marcus Rashford is vying for a starting position in Tuchel’s team, having made a positive impact as a substitute in the first two matches and scoring against Croatia. Tuchel is working to resolve the issues on the left side of the team as they progress through the tournament.
