Mexico maintains perfect record, Czech Republic eliminated from World Cup

Mexico maintain 100% winning record as Czech Rep go home

Mexico secures maximum points in Group A

Mexico concluded their World Cup group stage campaign with a perfect record, securing maximum points and advancing as winners of Group A. The co-hosts achieved this feat by defeating the Czech Republic with a score of 3-0 in their final group match in Mexico City. This victory followed earlier wins against South Africa and South Korea, ensuring their progression to the knockout stages without conceding a single goal.

The final match saw goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones, and Alvaro Fidalgo, which ultimately eliminated the Czech Republic from the tournament. Having already confirmed their status as group winners, Mexico’s manager, Javier Aguirre, opted to rotate his squad for this fixture, introducing five new players into the starting lineup.

One of these new starters, left-back Mateo Chavez, demonstrated composure to score his first international goal just after half-time. The team’s strong performance throughout the group stage has positioned them well for the upcoming knockout rounds.

Emerging talent and veteran presence

The match against the Czech Republic highlighted both emerging talent and the enduring presence of a veteran player for Mexico. Gilberto Mora, a teenager making his first start of the tournament, impressed in midfield. Mora provided the assist that led to Mexico’s second goal, scored by Julian Quinones. His pass set up Jorge Sanchez, and after an initial save by goalkeeper Matej Kovar, Quinones capitalised on a loose ball inside the six-yard box.

Mora’s appearance marked a significant milestone as he became the sixth-youngest player in history to start a men’s World Cup match and the youngest ever for Mexico. He received a warm reception when he was substituted after 72 minutes, with his replacement, Alvaro Fidalgo, sealing the victory with a goal from 15 yards.

In a notable moment, 40-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made a late appearance as a substitute, receiving one of the loudest ovations at Azteca Stadium. This marks Ochoa’s sixth World Cup campaign, a record he shares with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi, although he has only featured in four of these tournaments, having been an unused squad member in 2006 and 2010.

Czech Republic’s tournament exit and upcoming fixtures

The Czech Republic’s loss to Mexico confirmed their elimination from the World Cup. They finished at the bottom of Group A with only one point from their three matches. Their campaign concluded without advancing to the knockout stages.

Meanwhile, Mexico, as Group A winners, are scheduled to play their last-32 tie against one of the eight best third-placed teams. This match will take place in Mexico City on Wednesday, 1 July, at 02:00 BST. The specific opponent for Mexico could change depending on other results in the tournament.

In other Group A action, South Africa secured their first-ever World Cup knockout berth with a 1-0 victory over South Korea. Thapelo Maseko’s second-half strike in the 63rd minute was decisive. South Africa finished with four points, placing them behind Mexico in Group A. South Korea, with three points, still has a chance to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their tactical discipline. South Africa will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on 28 June.
