Hungarian Grand Prix: Fernando Alonso optimistic about Aston Martin's major upgrade

Aston Martin is set to debut a significant upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix, aiming to improve its performance after a challenging start to the 2026 season. The team has opted for a comprehensive overhaul rather than incremental updates, a decision made to efficiently utilize their budget under the sport’s spending cap.

The upgrade includes a heavily revised car featuring reduced weight, a new chassis, and substantial aerodynamic changes. Fernando Alonso expressed optimism about these developments but cautioned against high expectations, emphasizing the importance of understanding the car’s direction and unlocking its performance.

Team’s Strategy and Challenges

The decision to introduce a single, major upgrade was a strategic choice, despite the team progressively falling behind competitors who adopted a more conventional approach of smaller, frequent updates. Adrian Newey, Aston Martin‘s chief technical officer, noted that the team made a difficult but necessary decision to forgo developments in the first half of the year to better organize and research for future improvements.

The team’s performance has been hampered by both chassis and power unit issues. Circuits like Silverstone and Spa proved particularly challenging due to the performance limitations of their Honda engine. Even at the Spanish Grand Prix, the team was significantly off the pace of leading midfield teams. The Honda engine itself will receive a development update at the Dutch Grand Prix, following Formula 1‘s summer break.

Newey explained that serious work on the 2026 car began later than rivals, contributing to a significant gap. He also highlighted that the team was relying on outdated tools and processes, some dating back to the early 1990s Jordan F1 operation. This difficult period has been used as an opportunity to overhaul their working methods.

Alonso’s Future and Team Expectations

Fernando Alonso, whose contract concludes at the end of the season, is evaluating his future in Formula 1. While he has a contract with Aston Martin and is committed to the team long-term, his decision to continue racing will not solely depend on the performance of the new upgrade. He also considers whether the energy management demands of current F1 engines provide him with the necessary adrenaline and enjoyment.

The upcoming race in Hungary, with its slower circuit, is expected to alleviate some of the engine management issues experienced on high-speed tracks. Alonso believes the team will resolve its problems, stating his confidence in Adrian Newey to eventually deliver a top-tier car and in Honda to address power unit issues. He seeks to understand the initial impact of the new package.

Mike Krack, Aston Martin‘s Chief Trackside Officer, stated the primary goal for the upgrades is to enable the team to compete effectively again. He emphasized that the period without upgrades is now over, and the team is looking forward to seeing the results in Budapest. The chassis upgrade will be complemented by a new Honda engine at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Shintaro Orihara, Honda‘s Trackside General Manager and Chief Engineer, noted that the challenging winter testing period helped strengthen the relationship between Honda and Aston Martin. Reserve driver Jak Crawford has been instrumental in the development push, contributing through simulator work and FP1 outings.

The team’s focus is on significant aerodynamic changes and weight reduction, with the aim of getting close to the weight limit. Newey anticipates a substantial improvement but refrained from providing specific performance figures before the car hits the track.

The Hungarian Grand Prix will provide the first opportunity to assess the impact of these extensive modifications.
