In a recent Twenty20 International (T20I) match in Harare, India secured a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe. The match saw Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a teenage batter, achieve a significant milestone by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in men’s T20Is. His performance was crucial in helping India chase down a target of 126 runs.
Sooryavanshi reached his maiden T20I fifty off just 18 balls. His innings included four boundaries and four sixes. This record was set at 15 years and 118 days old, surpassing the previous record held by Louis Bruce of Gibraltar, who achieved a fifty against Malta in 2021 at 16 years, 56 days.
Sooryavanshi’s Impact and Captain’s Reaction
India captain Shreyas Iyer praised Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach to the game. Iyer highlighted the young batter’s confidence on the field. This victory marked India’s first T20I win under Iyer’s captaincy, following a series of losses during a recent tour of the UK and a series in Ireland.
Sooryavanshi had previously been called up for T20I matches against Ireland and England. In his first three T20Is against England, he scored 14, 13, and 15 runs. Despite those earlier scores, his aggressive intent was evident from the start against Zimbabwe.
During the match, Zimbabwe, after being put in to bat, managed to score 125 for 7 in their 20 overs. All-rounder Wessly Madhevere was their top scorer with 39 runs. India’s bowlers restricted the home side effectively, maintaining control throughout the series opener.
Sooryavanshi’s innings ended when he was caught at deep third man by Ben Curran off a delivery from Richard Ngarava, departing with the score at 68 for 2. Following his dismissal, wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan contributed 35 runs, and captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten with 28 runs, ensuring India reached the target with 40 balls to spare.
The captain expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting the tremendous execution by the players. He also mentioned that the pitch offered bounce and variability in both innings, which the team adapted to well. This win at the Harare Sports Club ended a seven-match winless streak for Iyer since he took on the captaincy.

In Zimbabwe’s innings, Madhevere was run out after a 58-run sixth-wicket partnership with Tadiwanashe Marumani, who scored 27 not out. The scoreboard showed contributions from various players, with M. Yadav taking two wickets for 18 runs and P. Yadav also securing two wickets for 19 runs for India.
For India, A. Sharma scored 1 run before being dismissed, and T. Varma remained unbeaten with 6 runs. The bowling figures for Zimbabwe included Muzarabani with two wickets for 26 runs and Ngarava with one wicket for 30 runs.
Sooryavanshi had also previously scored 175 runs off 80 balls at the same venue during the ICC Under-19 World Cup Final in January of this year, where India secured a record sixth title. This recent T20I victory provides a boost of confidence for the team.
India is scheduled to play Zimbabwe in the second T20I on 25 July, also in Harare.
