Key Athletes Absent from Commonwealth Games
Dina Asher-Smith, a prominent athlete from Blackheath & Bromley Harriers, has withdrawn from the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Her absence was confirmed just hours before the opening ceremony. Asher-Smith was scheduled to participate in the women’s 4x100m relay event.
This marks the second consecutive Commonwealth Games Asher-Smith will miss, having also been absent from the 2022 Games in Birmingham due to injury. Her withdrawal is part of a larger trend, as several other notable athletes have also pulled out of the competition.
Among the other athletes not competing are Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Matthew Hudson-Smith, Zak Seddon, Amber Anning, and Daryll Neita. Team England has acknowledged these changes to its squad, with Renee Regis stepping in to replace Asher-Smith.
The athletics team leader, Scott Grace, extended his best wishes to those who have left the team, whether due to injury or other circumstances. He also wished them luck with their recoveries or for future opportunities in their seasons. Grace expressed enthusiasm for the five additional athletes joining Team England, highlighting the opportunity for them to represent their country.
The withdrawal of Asher-Smith means that the number of competitors from Kent has decreased to nine. Another athlete from the region, para powerlifter Liam McGarry from Dartford, had previously withdrawn last month following a fight against sepsis.
Hodgkinson Also Misses Competition
Another significant absence from this year’s Commonwealth Games is Keely Hodgkinson. Despite winning a silver medal at the previous Games in Birmingham in 2022, Hodgkinson will not be participating in Glasgow. She had indicated earlier in the year that she would not feature due to a demanding schedule.
Hodgkinson’s focus for the year is on the European Championships, which are also set to take place in Birmingham in August. In an interview conducted in March, she stated that her busy schedule required her to prioritize certain events, leading to her decision not to compete in the Commonwealth Games.
Former Team GB sprinter Katharine Merry confirmed that Hodgkinson had made the decision not to be involved in the Glasgow event prior to the squad announcement. Merry clarified that Hodgkinson’s absence was a choice, not a missed opportunity.
Hodgkinson’s decision comes after she teased a potential change in her appearance on social media, asking her followers about a possible hair color change. She has also recently launched a collaborative training and racing collection with Nike, which she described as a lifelong dream.
The Commonwealth Games officially commenced on Thursday, with Glasgow serving as the host city for the 23rd edition of the event. Over 3,000 athletes from 74 countries and territories are expected to compete for 215 gold medals across 16 sports over the next 11 days.
This year’s Games have been scaled back after the Australian city of Victoria withdrew from hosting duties in 2023, with Glasgow stepping in to host, having last done so in 2014. Despite the reduced scale, the event will still feature prominent athletes such as Scotland’s new mile world-record holder Josh Kerr, South African swimmer Chad le Clos, and Welsh Olympic cycling hero Emma Finucane.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the reigning heptathlon champion, and para-cyclist Kadeena Cox are among those included in the Team England squad for the Games.
Hodgkinson’s profile has continued to grow following her 800m gold medal win at the Paris Olympics, leading to endorsement deals with major brands including Nike, Omega, and Vitality. Her recent collaboration with Nike was shared on social media, where she expressed her excitement about the project.
