Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden signs new four-year contract

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract, extending his stay at the club until 2030. This agreement comes as the club enters a new era under head coach Enzo Maresca.

Foden’s previous deal was set to conclude next summer. The 26-year-old made his first-team debut at 17 under former manager Pep Guardiola. He has since accumulated 369 appearances for City, contributing to six Premier League titles, one Champions League, and two FA Cups.

Despite his past achievements, Foden was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May, following a season where he started only 23 Premier League matches. He expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with Maresca, who served as an assistant to Guardiola during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 season.

Commitment to the Club

Foden conveyed his deep commitment to City, stating that playing for the club has always been his aspiration and that wearing the shirt is an honour. He acknowledged his fortune in being part of a historic period marked by numerous titles, while also emphasising the team’s forward-looking approach to win more.

He also praised Maresca’s contribution during the Treble season, noting the respect and affection the players had for him. Foden, along with John Stones and Bernardo Silva, is one of City’s most decorated players, having spent his entire career at the club under Guardiola, who concluded his 10-year tenure in May.

Over the past six seasons, Foden is among only three Premier League players to have scored 10 or more goals in all competitions, alongside Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins. His performance in the year following City’s Treble season saw him achieve a career-high of 27 goals and 12 assists. However, his output in the subsequent two campaigns has been less prolific due to a change in his role within the team.

Last season, faster players like Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo often supplied striker Erling Haaland from wide positions, with Rayan Cherki frequently preferred as the playmaker in an attacking midfield role. This shift meant Foden sometimes played in a deeper position, which impacted his ability to score and provide key passes.

Last season, Foden scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League games. In the campaign before that, he scored seven goals and assisted twice in 28 top-flight matches. His exclusion from Tuchel’s World Cup squad led the Professional Footballers’ Association to suggest he was a “victim” of football’s demanding schedule, noting he “has not been the version we saw two years ago.”

Foden’s new contract is seen as a recognition of a homegrown talent and highlights the continued importance of the club’s academy. As City embarks on a new chapter under Maresca, the academy’s role remains central to the club’s strategy.
