Portnoy’s Stance on DeChambeau
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, has publicly supported Rory McIlroy in his ongoing rivalry with Bryson DeChambeau. Portnoy described the LIV Golf star as “smoke and mirrors” regarding his public image. Speaking on Wake Up Barstool, Portnoy indicated his full agreement with McIlroy’s recent criticisms of DeChambeau, which followed a rules controversy at The Open Championship.
Portnoy stated, “I agree with everything that Rory is saying,” according to a video shared by Wake Up Barstool on X. He expressed his enjoyment of “bad blood in golf,” specifically referencing the rivalry between Bryson and Rory. While acknowledging that some may not like Rory, Portnoy believes McIlroy is not performative. In contrast, he views Bryson as someone who is “trying to intentionally craft an image.”
The recent drama began during the second round of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. DeChambeau received a two-shot penalty for violating Rule 8.1, which pertains to “inadvertently improving the area of his intended back swing” on the fifth hole. DeChambeau disputed the ruling for an extended period and reportedly considered not continuing to play in the tournament.
McIlroy, who observed the incident live from the players’ lounge, found the breach to be evident. He characterized DeChambeau’s reaction as “performative,” expressed that he was “not particularly fond” of DeChambeau, and believed the two-shot penalty was “justified for sure.” Portnoy, who has previously been critical of McIlroy, appreciated this directness.
McIlroy’s Past Criticisms and Recent Invitation
Portnoy noted that while McIlroy can sometimes be perceived negatively, he does not believe McIlroy is concerned about his public image. He contrasted this with DeChambeau, suggesting that “Bryson 100% is” focused on perception, and that “Everything about him is designed to, with thought of how people perceive him.”
Despite his public criticism, McIlroy has extended a surprising invitation to DeChambeau. The six-time major champion welcomed the prospect of DeChambeau participating in this year’s Amgen Irish Open. McIlroy suggested that DeChambeau’s presence would significantly benefit the tournament.
Regarding DeChambeau potentially playing in Ireland, McIlroy commented, “I mean, I think that would be great for the tournament, absolutely. Having someone like Bryson at the Irish Open, yeah, it would be great for the tournament.” The Amgen Irish Open is scheduled to take place at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, Ireland. McIlroy is the defending champion after winning last year’s title in a playoff against Joakim Lagergren.
The invitation follows McIlroy’s candid assessment of DeChambeau earlier in the week. Their rivalry has intensified since DeChambeau joined LIV Golf, with McIlroy becoming a prominent supporter of the PGA Tour. McIlroy stated, “I won’t pretend to be up here and defend Bryson. I’m not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it’s performative. I think a lot of it’s for attention.”
The penalty incident at The Open Championship also caused a delay in the release of the third-round tee times. McIlroy supported the R&A’s decision to impose the penalty despite the disruption. In the tournament, DeChambeau finished tied for 14th, while McIlroy ended the week in a tie for 40th.
