The Genesis Scottish Open at Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, is implementing a hydrogen and solar power initiative, aiming to be among the most sustainable golf tournaments staged. Significant parts of the tournament site are powered by green hydrogen, which produces no emissions, while the Fan Village’s main stage and merchandise shop utilise solar power.
The primary hydrogen compound is situated between the first and 15th holes, featuring two 250kWh hydrogen power units (HPUs) with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System. These HPUs, supported by the Scottish Government, supply power to the hospitality and merchandise store infrastructure on the 15th hole, including large screens and the Genesis Public Lounge. Additionally, a HPU near the 13th hole powers the entire broadcast compound. This marks the seventh instance a broadcast compound at a DP World Tour event has been fully powered by green hydrogen, a practice that began at the 2023 BMW PGA Championship.
GeoPura, a United Kingdom-based clean energy company, provides the hydrogen power cells, with installation and management handled by Film and TV Services (FTVS), a subsidiary of Aggreko. It is estimated that the HPUs will save more than 16,200 kg CO₂e compared to diesel generators, and a predicted reduction of 600 kg CO₂e from energy generation compared to the 2025 tournament. These HPUs generate low-carbon electricity from green hydrogen, producing only water as a by-product at the point of power generation.
While solar power has become a more common addition to DP World Tour events, its use at the Genesis Scottish Open this year is a first for the tournament. In addition to these new initiatives, the event is expanding its use of mains electricity. In 2025, 872.377 kWh of mains electricity was used, and this figure is set to increase in 2026 as grid connections are extended to include the broadcast compound and the 13th green bar and catering area, further reducing reliance on temporary generators.

These sustainability efforts are part of the DP World Tour’s Golf for Good programme, specifically its Green Drive initiative, which focuses on reducing operational and event greenhouse gas emissions and moving the Tour towards net zero carbon. The Golf for Good programme at the Genesis Scottish Open also highlights the importance of nature, leveraging the diverse landscapes visited by the DP World Tour each season.
Fans at the Fan Village can engage with wildlife through a collaboration with Zoolab, offering educational workshops and ethical encounters with various animals such as snakes, frogs, and tortoises. A Little Links Nature Trail across the course allows fans to learn about the diverse flora and fauna at Renaissance Club. A Sustainability Symposium was held on Wednesday, bringing together golf clubs, industry, and government partners, delivered with VisitScotland, Scottish Golf, East Lothian Council, and GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation.
Maria Grandinetti-Milton, Director of Sustainability at the European Tour Group, noted that while hydrogen power has been experimented with for four years, this is the most ambitious rollout yet, and the first time hydrogen has been used at this scale to power a major sporting event on a greenfield site. She expressed excitement about the initiative and the opportunity to share learnings with other venues, also highlighting golf’s connection to the natural world.

The Genesis Scottish Open features top players including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Robert MacIntyre, who are competing ahead of the upcoming Open Championship. The PGA Tour is co-sanctioning the event with the DP World Tour for the fourth consecutive year. The Renaissance Club, designed by Tom Doak, has hosted the Scottish Open until 2026, establishing its reputation as a premier golf course.
