Sinner’s Dominant Performance
Jannik Sinner, the reigning champion, delivered a commanding performance in the Wimbledon semi-finals, overcoming Novak Djokovic to secure his spot in the final against Alexander Zverev. Sinner’s victory on Friday marked a significant moment, as he denied Djokovic’s pursuit of a standalone record 25th Grand Slam title.
The world number one showcased a display of power and precision, mirroring his performance at the same stage last year. Djokovic’s Record Pursuit Continues
For Djokovic, the semi-final loss means his wait to surpass Margaret Court and claim sole ownership of the all-time record for most Grand Slam singles titles continues. Despite a remarkable five-and-a-quarter-hour win against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the longest-ever Wimbledon quarter-final earlier in the week, Djokovic was unable to seriously challenge Sinner.
Djokovic, who is 39 years old, managed to save two break points in the second set but could not prevent Sinner from breaking his serve for a 4-3 lead. He also dropped serve in the first game of the third set, which paved the way for Sinner’s relatively swift victory in two hours and 20 minutes.
The Serb received loud cheers from the crowd as he exited the court, having been well-supported throughout the difficult afternoon. His last Grand Slam title was at the 2023 US Open, and since then, he has lost six major semi-finals, four of which were against Sinner.
Djokovic will be 40 years old when he next has an opportunity to draw level with Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. He had previously defeated Sinner in the Australian Open semi-finals earlier this year, but then lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final.
Path to the Final
Sinner’s journey to the final has been marked by strong form, as he has not dropped a set since his opening match. He produced his best tennis of the fortnight against Djokovic, refusing to offer his opponent any opportunities to gain a foothold in the match. His superb serving included 16 aces on Friday, and he demonstrated superiority in both attack and defence, hitting 40 winners to just 15 unforced errors.
Sinner will enter Sunday’s final as the favourite, having not lost to Zverev since 2023. He has a strong head-to-head record against Zverev, having beaten him in 10 of their 14 previous encounters. However, Sinner is aware that Zverev presents a different challenge after winning his first major title at Roland Garros.
The Italian is aiming for his fifth Grand Slam title. His opponent, Zverev, reached the final after ending the run of British wildcard Arthur Fery in the other semi-final. Sinner’s victory over Djokovic lasted just six minutes longer than his quickest win of this year’s tournament.
Sinner continued to elevate his game after Djokovic saved the first break point of the match, hitting with immense power and precision. He forced two more break points in the ninth game, eventually converting one with a stunning backhand down the line. The crowd rallied behind Djokovic, but opportunities remained scarce for the Serb. Sinner’s relentless pressure continued into the third set, where he created two break points in Djokovic’s opening game, ultimately converting one to seal his victory in two hours and 20 minutes.
