By Bilal Ahmed — 2 July 2026 — 4 min read

Max Verstappen has directly addressed the ongoing speculation linking him with a potential move to McLaren, stating that any significant developments regarding his future would come directly from him. The four-time F1 drivers’ champion expressed his frustration with media reports on the subject ahead of the British Grand Prix, emphasizing his focus on his current team, Red Bull.

Reports from various media outlets, including Sky Sports, suggested that Verstappen’s management had engaged in discussions with McLaren prior to the recent Austrian Grand Prix. However, the content of these alleged meetings was not disclosed, and Verstappen had not commented on them until now. The Dutchman’s contract with Red Bull reportedly includes exit clauses that could become active, particularly if he falls outside the top two positions in the drivers’ championship by the summer break.

Verstappen’s stance on transfer rumors

Arriving at Silverstone for the ninth round of the F1 season, Verstappen’s future has been a prominent topic. Despite his contract with Red Bull extending until the end of 2028, there is an understanding that he could depart the Milton Keynes-based team at the close of the current year under certain conditions. The summer break is reportedly just three rounds and 58 points away, and his position in the championship could be a factor in activating these clauses.

At the previous weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff publicly dismissed the possibility of signing Verstappen, affirming his confidence in his current drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. While this particular avenue for a move appeared to close, speculation linking Verstappen to a sensational switch to McLaren intensified. This was partly fueled by the news that his long-term race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is expected to join the reigning constructors’ champions within the next 18 months.

Verstappen, whose camp has reportedly held discussions with the Woking-based team, made it clear he would no longer engage with the rumors. When questioned about the truthfulness of the speculation, he told media, including RacingNews365, that he would not involve himself in it. He reiterated his previous statement: “If there’s something new or something that changes, you will hear it from me, not from someone else writing it, right?”

McLaren’s Lando Norris also weighed in on the reports, describing the idea of Verstappen being interested in a move to McLaren as “a cool thing” but “not a serious thing.” Norris acknowledged that it was positive to hear a four-time world champion might consider joining the team, but he also indicated that it was not a pressing concern for the present.

Oscar Piastri, another McLaren driver, also commented on the situation, stating that the rumors did not significantly affect him. He expressed satisfaction with his current position and trust in his team, noting his existing contract. Piastri emphasized his focus on building upon his recent successes.

Focusing on current performance

Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, previously stated that Verstappen was not destined to compete in the midfield of F1. This sentiment aligns with the clear message from Verstappen’s team and Red Bull: the Laurent Mekies-led outfit must provide a car capable of winning races to retain its star driver. The RB22 car experienced a challenging start to the season, but an upgrade package introduced by the six-time constructors’ champions at their home event in Spielberg reportedly propelled Verstappen back into contention for race victories.

Verstappen highlighted his commitment to his current responsibilities. “I just focus on the job that I have with my team,” the 71-time grand prix winner stated. He noted the team’s upward trajectory, describing it as “really nice to see.” He also reflected on a “really positive weekend in Austria,” where he secured a second-place finish, just 1.6 seconds behind Russell.

He added that the team is focused on continuous improvement, acknowledging the tough competition in the sport. Verstappen’s primary objective remains to enhance the car’s speed and performance. The upcoming British Grand Prix will be the next opportunity for him to demonstrate this focus on track.

The return of LEGO to the F1 grid at Silverstone this weekend for a driver parade in mini LEGO cars also garnered attention, with Lewis Hamilton humorously casting doubt on his participation, despite enjoying the previous event in Miami.

The ongoing discussions around Verstappen’s future underscore the competitive nature of Formula 1, with teams constantly striving to secure top talent and provide winning machinery.

Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull is set to run until the end of 2028.
