Croatia has advanced to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Ghana in Philadelphia. The win ensures Zlatko Dalic’s side progresses as runners-up in Group L, behind England.
The match saw Petar Sucic open the scoring for Croatia in the first half with a long-range strike. Ghana’s Derrick Luckassen later equalised, but a late header from Nikola Vlasic sealed the win for Croatia.
Match Overview
The game’s initial stages were cautious, with neither side registering a shot or a touch in the opposition box during the first 15 minutes. Croatia’s Nikola Vlasic had the first attempt, which grazed the outside of the left-hand post.
Croatia took the lead when Inter Milan midfielder Petar Sucic received a pass from Mateo Kovacic. Sucic then drove a low, right-footed shot through Luckassen’s legs and into the bottom corner of the net. This goal came after approximately 30 minutes of play, with Sucic striking from around 35 yards out.
Ghana, despite a defensive approach in a previous draw against England, conceded their first goal of the tournament. Towards the end of the first half, Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo had a shot that went narrowly wide, marking Ghana’s first attempt on goal. The Black Stars had not managed a first-half shot on target for their third consecutive game.
Ghana showed renewed vigour in the second half following the introduction of Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu at half-time. Fatawu quickly made an impact, unleashing a powerful shot that went just over the bar. This improved performance led to Ghana’s equaliser in the 73rd minute.
The equaliser came when Luckassen headed in a delivery from Ernest Nuamah. The goal underwent a lengthy VAR review, lasting nearly four minutes, due to a potential offside position for Kwasi Sibo. However, the on-field official, Drew Fischer, ultimately confirmed the goal, stating that Sibo was not interfering with play.

With the momentum seemingly shifting in Ghana’s favour as the match entered its final 10 minutes, Mario Pasalic of Croatia forced a significant one-handed save from goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Shortly after, Nikola Vlasic scored the decisive goal for Croatia, heading in a corner kick from Luka Modric. This goal secured Croatia’s second victory in Group L.
Implications for Group L and Player Milestones
Croatia’s win means they qualify for the last 32 as group runners-up. Ghana, despite the loss, will also advance to the last 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. The outcome of this match also confirmed the elimination of Scotland from the World Cup.
Croatia, who were finalists in 2018 and semi-finalists in 2022, needed to avoid defeat to ensure their place in the knockout stages. Their victory, coupled with England’s 2-0 win over Panama in the other Group L fixture, solidified their position.
The match also highlighted a significant milestone for Luka Modric. At 40 years and 291 days old, Modric became the oldest player on record since 1966 to provide an assist in a World Cup match, setting up Vlasic’s winning goal. Modric’s appearance in the game marked his 22nd World Cup appearance, placing him alongside Manuel Neuer and surpassing Diego Maradona in this regard.

Croatia is scheduled to play the Group K runners-up, currently identified as Portugal, in Toronto on Friday, July 3.
