Former England fast bowler Liam Plunkett has made his professional baseball debut, playing for the Oakland Ballers in the Pioneer Baseball League. Plunkett, a member of England’s 2019 ODI World Cup-winning squad, transitioned to baseball after relocating to the United States five years ago.
His debut on Friday night saw him secure a strikeout against the Yuba-Sutter Freebirds at Raimondi Park. Plunkett’s inclusion in the team was facilitated by the Pioneer Baseball League’s ‘marketing player’ exception, a rule that allows independent clubs to sign non-prospect players, often notable veterans or former Major League Baseball players, to their active roster.
From Cricket to the Mound
Plunkett’s journey from cricket to baseball marks a significant sporting transition. He had not played for England since the 2019 tournament, where he picked up three wickets in the final match against New Zealand, a game England won on boundary count after a tie. Following his move to the USA, he has also participated in Major League Cricket (MLC) for the San Francisco Unicorns, playing six matches in the previous season.
During his debut for the Ballers, Plunkett threw five pitches and recorded a strikeout in an 18-11 defeat. He described the experience as a mix of pitching and bowling, finding it unusual yet rewarding. Plunkett remarked on feeling nervous as he was the first on the mound, but praised the catcher’s performance.

The former England international has a notable cricket career, having made over 100 appearances for the national team and taking nearly 200 international wickets. His move to professional baseball highlights a rare cross-sport transition for a high-profile international cricketer.
A Unique Sporting Transition
Plunkett’s debut in professional baseball follows his signing of a contract with the Oakland Ballers on Thursday. He reflected on the experience, stating that he initially thought it might be a ceremonial open pitch, but it turned out to be a real game situation.
The ‘marketing player’ clause under which Plunkett signed allows teams in the Pioneer Baseball League to bypass standard roster eligibility limits, enabling them to bring in players who can generate interest and engagement. This rule was instrumental in his ability to join the Ballers.
Plunkett’s successful strikeout in his first game was a highlight for him. He expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting that the hitter seemed surprised by his delivery, which he attributed to his unique blend of bowling and pitching techniques. This transition showcases his adaptability as an athlete.
While Plunkett is a prominent cricketer to make such a move, there was a reverse transition four years prior when former Japanese professional baseball player Shogo Kimura successfully moved to cricket. Kimura, who retired from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in 2017, made his international cricket debut for Japan in 2022, playing five T20Is and scoring 35 runs. He also represented Japan at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Plunkett’s debut on Friday, June 26, marks a new chapter in his sporting career, almost seven years after his Cricket World Cup victory with England.
