The Summer Mavericks achieved a 96-88 victory against the Summer Grizzlies in their third NBA Summer League game. The contest took place on Monday at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Arena, marking the Mavericks‘ first win in the Summer League, bringing their record to 1-2. The Grizzlies‘ record now stands at 1-1.
Early in the game, Cam Boozer of the Grizzlies presented a challenge for the Mavericks. However, Dallas implemented a defensive strategy to mitigate his impact. Vsevolod Ishchenko, the Mavericks’ second-round pick, started by guarding Boozer. Despite Boozer‘s strength, Mavericks Summer League coach Joe Boylan‘s help-and-recover scheme proved effective. Boozer finished the game with 21 points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the Grizzlies.
Key Player Performances
Mavericks rookie guard Sergio de Larrea was a significant contributor, especially in the later stages of the game. He recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 assists. His playmaking was evident throughout the night, culminating in a strong finish. De Larrea dished out 12 assists while committing only three turnovers, a notable improvement from a previous game where he had four turnovers and four assists.
Another key player for the Mavericks was Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu. After Boozer‘s initial strong start, Coach Boylan brought Akobundu-Ehiogu into the game. The former Memphis Tiger immediately sparked a Mavericks run, scoring his first three buckets in transition. He also made a crucial block midway through the first quarter when the game was tied. Akobundu-Ehiogu finished with 16 points and four rebounds, displaying athleticism with four alley-oop finishes, including one in the fourth quarter that extended Dallas‘s lead.

Darin Green Jr. and Jaden Springer also made an impact with their shooting. Green Jr. connected on his first four shots of the game, including his first three attempts from 3-point range. His third 3-pointer, assisted by Springer, gave the Mavericks a 43-31 lead in the second quarter. Springer, who played last season for the Birmingham Squadron, hit his first two long-range shots in the first half. Green Jr. continued his strong shooting into the second half, hitting another 3-pointer after a steal, which gave the Mavs a 58-55 advantage in the third quarter. He led the Mavs with 18 points and five rebounds in the win.
Team Dynamics and Absences
The Mavericks faced the Grizzlies without two players due to injury and illness. Morez Johnson Jr., the No. 9 pick, missed the game due to calf soreness. He is likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the Summer League after playing two games. Ryan Nembhard was also absent from the game against the Grizzlies due to an illness.

Before the game, Johnson Jr. had been highlighted as a defensive stalwart, averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds through two games, along with six total blocks and five steals. Coach Boylan praised Johnson Jr.‘s effort and energy, noting his ability to challenge shots and protect the rim. The matchup with Boozer was anticipated as a significant test for Johnson Jr.‘s defensive capabilities, though he ultimately did not play.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper, a former Mavericks draftee, played for the Grizzlies and contributed 18 points in their loss. He commented on Boozer‘s mature offensive makeup and fundamental skills, stating that Boozer plays at his own pace and is a great addition to the Grizzlies team.
The Mavericks held a 50-46 lead at halftime. Akobundu-Ehiogu is expected to receive significant playing time in the Mavs’ final Summer League game on Thursday.
