England captain Harry Kane stated the team is “missing that final piece of the jigsaw” after their defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 after taking an early lead, leading to criticism of the team and manager Thomas Tuchel for becoming too defensive.
Kane expressed his deep disappointment on social media, noting the team was “close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough.” He acknowledged the high expectations and the team’s consistent presence in the latter stages of tournaments over the past eight years, emphasising the need to improve.
Semi-final defeat and tactical discussions
Anthony Gordon scored for England in the 55th minute against Argentina. However, the team subsequently adopted a more defensive posture, inviting pressure from their opponents. Argentina capitalised on this shift, scoring two late goals through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to secure a 2-1 victory.
Following the match, former England captain Wayne Rooney suggested that Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive.” Tuchel faced criticism for his defensive substitutions, particularly given that England maintained only 12% possession between taking the lead and conceding the second goal in the 92nd minute. Some reports indicate that several key players were dissatisfied with the team’s approach during the final stages of the game.
Tuchel, however, maintained that a deep defensive stance was not the intended strategy, suggesting that controlling the game with possession might not be inherent to the team’s style. He described the match as two distinct halves: one before England‘s goal and one after, where Argentina played with increased risk and rhythm.
This is not the first instance of England being accused of becoming overly defensive in crucial matches. Similar situations occurred under former manager Gareth Southgate, including the Euro 2021 final against Italy and the Euro 2024 final against Spain. Statistical data indicates that since 1998, England has been eliminated whenever they have faced a top-10 ranked nation in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
Kane, who scored six goals during the tournament, reflected on the need for resilience. He stated, “You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again and that’s what we will do, there’s no other way but to keep believing and keeping pushing.”
Jude Bellingham, another player who scored six goals in the tournament, struggled to articulate his feelings after the exit but shared a four-page poem titled ‘The Lions Way.’ He also called for “unity” among supporters, stating, “Don’t let the unity and love we’ve seen in our country end with this campaign. When we’re together we can achieve big things.”
Path to the semi-finals and future outlook
England began their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, having been tied 2-2 at halftime. Kane noted that an improved second-half performance followed Tuchel’s half-time message to “lose in our way” if they were to lose. The team then drew 0-0 with Ghana and secured a 2-0 win against Panama to top their group.
In the knockout stages, England came from behind to beat DR Congo 2-1 in the last 32. They also secured a 3-2 win against co-hosts Mexico despite being reduced to 10 men, and defeated Norway 2-1 after extra time before their semi-final match against Argentina.
Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, who assisted Gordon’s goal, expressed his devastation, stating, “We gave so much to reach this far and for it to end the way it did hurts.” Gordon, who recently moved from Newcastle United to Barcelona, added that he genuinely believed it was their time to win.
England is now scheduled to play a third-place play-off match against France, who were defeated by Spain in the other semi-final, on Saturday.
The chief executive of the Football Association, Mark Bullingham, has backed England to learn from their defeat and compete for silverware at the European Championships in 2028, which they will co-host. Bullingham anticipates that manager Tuchel will “raise everyone” following the World Cup exit. England will be one of four host nations for the next Euros, alongside Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland, aiming to improve upon their final appearances in the 2021 and 2024 tournaments.
Kane, who will be 33 later this month, has not commented on his potential involvement in the next World Cup, but noted that Lionel Messi, 39, scored eight goals in the 2026 tournament.
