Oscar Piastri has expressed comfort with his position at McLaren amidst ongoing speculation linking Max Verstappen to the team. Piastri, known for his calm demeanor, stated he is “very comfortable in the position I’m at” ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. He confirmed his trust in the team, noting that McLaren has assured him of their satisfaction with his performance.
The Australian driver is under contract with McLaren until 2028. Despite this, rumors persist regarding a potential move by Verstappen, who is also under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028. Verstappen’s contract reportedly includes an exit clause tied to his championship standing at the summer break. He currently sits seventh in the drivers’ standings, making it impossible to reach the top two before the break.
Addressing the Rumours
Piastri acknowledged the “noise” surrounding his future and Verstappen’s potential involvement. He suggested that Verstappen, being an “incredible talent,” is likely exploring options due to Red Bull’s current performance struggles, as they are not winning races. However, Piastri maintained his confidence, stating, “I’m very comfortable that I’m not going anywhere.”
When asked directly about remaining with McLaren in 2027, Piastri gave a one-word response: “Yes.” He elaborated that conversations with McLaren chief executive Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella have been “very reassuring.” Piastri also indicated that he is not concerned about potential discussions between McLaren management and Verstappen, expressing trust in his team and the information he has received.
Verstappen, on his part, has been reticent about his future plans. When questioned by media, he repeatedly declined to confirm his commitment to Red Bull for next season, stating, “There’s nothing to say from my side.” He emphasized that if there were any new developments regarding his future, he would announce them himself.
Current Season Challenges
The 2026 Formula 1 season has presented challenges for McLaren, with new regulations fundamentally reshaping the grid. While powerhouses like Mercedes and Ferrari have seen a rise in performance, McLaren, last year’s constructors’ champions, have experienced a dip. Piastri is currently sixth in the championship standings with 82 points, a result of a difficult start to the season, including poor luck and reduced pace.
Piastri’s season has included incidents such as crashing out of his home grand prix in March and electrical issues in Shanghai that led to his car being towed from the grid. Despite these setbacks, he has achieved podium finishes in Miami and Japan. He noted that he feels he knows the car well, even though it has taken him some time to adapt to certain characteristics. McLaren is set to introduce a new rear wing for the Belgian Grand Prix, followed by a “significant upgrade package” in Hungary, in an effort to improve performance.
Beyond racing, Piastri also discussed the non-racing aspects of being a modern F1 driver, including media duties, advertising deals, and managing a social media presence. He acknowledged the financial demands of the sport, stating, “I get paid a lot of money to do those things.” He also shared insights into his pre-race routine, revealing that he sometimes sings to himself during a race, often repeating whatever music he has recently heard.
Piastri’s career has seen rapid progression through junior ranks, including championships in Formula Renault Eurocup in 2019, Formula 3 in 2020, and F2 in 2021. He has accumulated nine grand prix wins in his F1 career, including a victory at Spa last year.
