Sepang International Circuit to Host Race
The Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is set to host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4, 2026. This event will take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, according to announcements from Formula 1 and the FIA. The race will officially be known as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
This arrangement allows Formula 1 to maintain a full calendar of 23 races for the 2026 season, preserving a Grand Prix that might otherwise have been cancelled. The agreement involves Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia. The event is pending final agreements and official sign-off, including approval from the World Motor Sport Council.
Sepang, which first featured in Formula 1 in 1999, is recognised for its challenging layout, passionate fans, and unpredictable weather conditions. The circuit last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2017. Information regarding ticket sales for the event will be released at a later date.
Collaboration and Continuity for Formula 1
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his satisfaction with the decision, highlighting the sport’s capacity to adapt and find solutions. He thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, along with their respective governments, for their commitment.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, also praised the collaboration that made Malaysia‘s hosting of the Grand Prix possible. He noted Malaysia‘s historical significance in Formula 1 and stated that the return to Sepang reflects strong relationships and international cooperation within the sport. The safety and well-being of teams, volunteers, officials, and fans were prioritised throughout the process.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, stated that the event reflects Bahrain‘s dedication to the sport and its role in providing stability for Formula 1. He thanked Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, for his country’s support. The Bahrain Grand Prix has been a significant project for Prince Salman since its inception in 2004.
Regional Context and Future Calendar Considerations
The initial Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grands Prix, originally planned for April, were postponed earlier in the year. This rescheduling was influenced by regional challenges. The addition of the Sepang race helps ensure the Formula 1 calendar maintains its target number of races, which is important for contractual obligations with broadcasters and sponsorship agreements for teams.
While the Malaysia event secures a race for October, there is ongoing discussion regarding the final two scheduled races of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Contingency plans are being developed should these races not proceed. Alternatives under consideration include Imola in Italy, Portimao in Portugal, and Istanbul Park in Turkey, with a decision expected by September.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia expressed appreciation for the trust placed in Malaysia by Bahrain, Formula 1, and the FIA. He highlighted that this collaboration strengthens the friendship and partnership between Malaysia and Bahrain, and reaffirms Malaysia‘s capability to host major international events. Malaysia is prepared to welcome Formula 1 teams and fans to Sepang.
