Rollercoaster Semi-Final Unfolds
The Wimbledon semi-final between Karolina Muchova and Coco Gauff culminated in a dramatic tie-break, described as a “rollercoaster emotionally” by Muchova. After three intense sets, the match concluded with Muchova securing her first final appearance at SW19. The final score was 6-2 1-6 7-6 (12-10) in favour of the Czech player.
Tennis commentators highlighted the extraordinary nature of the tie-break. Martina Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon singles champion, remarked that “The whole match was the tie-break.” Annabel Croft also noted the “incredible drama” that met all expectations for a Grand Slam semi-final.

The tie-break began with Muchova taking an early lead, reaching 4-1. Despite appearing to be in discomfort, Muchova maintained composure, executing a volley winner and an impressive 113mph serve. Former British number one Anne Keothavong observed Muchova “digging deep” during this period.
Gauff began to mount a comeback, but Muchova responded with a sensational diving volley to extend her lead to 6-3. This moment drew exclamations from commentators, with Naomi Cavaday asking, “How has she managed that?” Muchova then served a 114mph ace.
Gauff steadily closed the gap, bringing the score to 6-6. Muchova then earned her first match point with a lob, but slipped, allowing Gauff to save it with a cross-court forehand winner. Muchova ultimately secured her second match point and converted it, sending Gauff wide before hitting an inside-out forehand winner.

Muchova’s victory sets up an all-Czech Grand Slam final against Linda Noskova. The pair will compete on Centre Court for their first major singles title. Croft praised Muchova’s “bravery” and how she “earned the win.”
For Gauff, the defeat marked a missed opportunity to reach her first grass-court final at the All England Club. Navratilova expressed sympathy for Gauff, acknowledging her fight but noting the eventual outcome. Gauff, the seventh seed, had previously expressed surprise at her strong performance on grass this season, having struggled on the surface in previous visits to Wimbledon.
Despite the loss, Gauff is projected to gain 770 WTA ranking points, potentially moving her up three places to world number four. However, she will not regain the American number one spot, as Jessica Pegula is set to achieve a career-high ranking of world number three. Muchova could surpass Gauff in the rankings if she wins the Wimbledon title.
Gauff’s perspective on the loss was praised by former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard, who called her comments “refreshing.” Gauff stated that many would desire to be in her position, despite the pain of losing in a semi-final. The 22-year-old American will now focus on the upcoming North American hard-court swing.
Muchova, who was a runner-up in the 2023 French Open, hopes to secure her first Grand Slam title in the upcoming final.
